ambre sultan 1997
The first blueprint of an amber perfume.
First released in the mid-1990s, Ambre Sultan is not just a fragrance. It is a reference point. One of Serge Lutens’ most iconic creations, it redefined what amber could be: not sweet and predictable like today's depictions, but dry, resinous, and deeply atmospheric.
Inspired by a piece of raw amber resin discovered in a Moroccan souk, this composition feels less like a perfume and more like an artifact. A study in warmth and shadow.
What unfolds is dense yet meditative: rich amber layered with aromatic herbs, bay leaf, and spices, softened by a subtle sweetness that never overwhelms. There is a natural roughness to it, almost dusty, like sun-warmed resins and forgotten apothecaries. It clings to the skin in a quiet, persistent way. Not evolving dramatically, but deepening.
What's equally rare here is that this perfume has been kept in its cellophane original packaging and unopened for almost 30 years. It is a symbol-luxe era serge lutens palais royale edition. Basically a unicorn that is impossible to find now used, let alone untouched.
Some describe it as sacred. Others as grounding.
All agree: it is unmistakable.
This is not a modern amber.
It is perfume that set the standard.
